Google and Intersect have launched construction of the Meitner Energy Center, a facility that will combine a new data centre with energy generation infrastructure in Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas, US.
According to the companies, the data centre will operate alongside more than a gigawatt of wind, solar, and battery storage. A portion of electricity will also be provided by on-site gas, which the firms state is to ensure reliable operations.

Located in the Texas Panhandle, the site is set to join Google’s network that supports products and services including Search, Gmail, Maps, Cloud, and various emergency and financial systems.
The majority of the centre’s power is expected to be sourced from renewable energy when it becomes operational.
Google and Intersect noted that the co-location of energy and data facilities is intended to supply a dedicated power source without increasing demand on the broader local electricity grid.
Google data centre public affairs regional head Andrew Hart said: “Our newest investment in Gray County deepens our partnership with Texas — a state that continues to lead with innovation and vision.
“We are excited to become a part of the community. More than just building a data center, our goal is to be a good neighbor, which starts on day one by investing in local priorities, protecting water and energy resources, and working with residents to build a strong future together.”
Water usage is a further focus of the project. Google has committed to advanced air-cooling technology at the site, which is designed to limit water consumption to basic domestic needs.
The company intends to replenish more freshwater than it uses and previously announced a $10m Texas Water Impact Fund to support water management projects in the state.
Intersect has been collaborating with local organisations in the area since 2022, backing community initiatives and educational programmes.
To support the construction workforce, Google is developing an 800-acre residential facility for up to 3,500 workers in Wheeler County. This is intended to reduce local infrastructure strain and includes planned amenities for worker wellbeing.
Google closed its acquisition of Intersect in March 2026. The companies’ first joint site in Haskel County, Texas, was announced in November 2025 and is beginning operations this month.
Last month, Google announced plans for a $15bn infrastructure investment in Missouri, which will see the construction of a new data centre in New Florence, Montgomery County.
