Google indicated that it finances for the total electricity consumed by its data centres and funds all infrastructure demands its operations require.

To date, Google has contracted more than one gigawatt (GW) of new generation capacity for Missouri, and, through a partnership with Ameren, is supporting over 500MW of additional expansion.

Collaborations with Ameren and Evergy have resulted in the Capacity Commitment Framework, which ensures large users pay for their electricity and infrastructure needs, with the aim of maintaining grid reliability and shielding local ratepayers.

Energy efficiency will factor into the data centre’s operations, with the facility employing advanced air-cooling technology and limiting water use to non-industrial purposes.

Google aims to replenish more freshwater than used by supporting watershed projects like the Missouri SWAN Smart Irrigation Initiative.

The project is set to create construction jobs during the build phase and permanent operational roles when active.

Google is collaborating with workforce development entities, including the Construction Laborers and Contractors Joint Training Fund of Eastern Missouri, and maintaining training initiatives in Kansas City.

Alphabet and Google president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat said: “We look forward to expanding Google’s investments in Missouri and helping Missourians benefit from the next wave of American innovation.

“To deliver the upside of technology, we are investing in workforce development and energy affordability, both directly and through our partnerships with local organisations.

“This commitment will provide thousands of Missourians with valuable technical and trade skills, while supporting energy affordability for residents in Montgomery County and across the state.”

Prior to this, Blackstone and Google entered into a joint venture to establish a US-based firm offering data centre capacity, operations, networking, and Google Cloud’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as a compute-as-a-service product.
