Google has announced a $15bn capital programme to develop data centre campuses in Malaysia between 2027 and 2028, targeting sites across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

Unveiled alongside Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, the investment expands upon the technology firm’s 2024 digital infrastructure commitments.

The upcoming facilities will support growing domestic computing requirements, handle regional workloads across services like Google Search, Maps, and Chrome, and host an upcoming Google Cloud region serving enterprise and public-sector organisations.

The firm already operates an initial data centre facility at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, where a local operations team is in place, and is recruiting technical staff for the planned locations.

Alphabet and Google president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat said: “Google is committed to growing our presence responsibly, delivering lasting value for Malaysia’s economy and people.

“This investment aligns with Malaysia’s development priorities—providing the foundational computing capacity to deliver the upside of innovation across the country while adding local power and water resources as our operations scale.

“At the community level, Google is proud to partner with local suppliers to expand their expertise and to equip workers, students, and entrepreneurs with in-demand skills, enabling Malaysians to capture the new opportunities unlocked by this computing capacity.”

Google will fund the complete electricity usage of the campuses alongside the direct grid connection costs.

To offset operational demand, the company intends to supply over 1GW of renewable generation to Malaysia’s National Grid via the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme, working with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Shizen Energy-Solarvest, and TotalEnergies.

The group also reported that its bespoke hardware and cooling configurations deliver a Power Usage Effectiveness of 1.12 to 1.14 locally, compared to the wider industry baseline of 1.54.

Water cooling will be implemented across the sites following local watershed assessments, alongside water replenishment projects across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

The multi-year project involves more than 80 domestic supply-chain companies across civil engineering, mechanical systems, cooling technology, and network operations.

Construction activities between 2027 and 2028 are forecast to contribute an annual average of $1.1bn to national GDP, supporting over 37,000 jobs per year.

Once operational, the facilities will sustain over 9,000 positions annually.

Parallel workforce initiatives include establishing Data Center Institutes at technical polytechnics to prepare local candidates for hyperscale engineering and maintenance roles.

In June this year, Google announced a $1.5bn investment across 2026 and 2027 to expand its data centre campus in Jackson County, Alabama, US.
