The planned campus will include more than $7m in funding for local community programmes.
This covers allocations such as $3m to bolster emergency dispatch services, over $1m for a new gathering space at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, and additional investment through the Amazon Montgomery County Community Fund, overseen by the nonprofit group ChangeX.
The fund aims to provide grants of up to $10,000 for community projects across the area. Infrastructure improvements are also expected as part of the project.
Amazon stated that it will upgrade local roadways, construct a new bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway on Ellis Road, and invest in water systems that will be donated to Montgomery County Public Water Supply District No. 1 upon completion.
The company has worked with local utility Ameren Missouri and said measures have been taken to ensure energy costs related to the campus will not be shouldered by other ratepayers.
According to the company, the data centre campus has been designed for water efficiency and will use recycled water for cooling, with rainwater harvesting predicted to supply about 20% of annual water needs.
The campus is expected to use less than 0.1% of the local aquifer’s annual recharge from rainfall. In addition, the company has backed a carbon-free energy project in Missouri, generating 138MW.
Amazon chief global affairs and legal officer David Zapolsky said: “Missouri has been home to Amazon since 2017 and more than 10,000 Missourians come to work with us every day. Today’s announcement reflects what we’ve learned over those years: that when you show up as a real partner, listen to the community, and invest for the long term, everyone benefits.
“We’re building data centres that will create hundreds of new jobs, support educators and students, and strengthen local infrastructure.”
