AirTrunk and Emergence Quantum have entered into a partnership to integrate cryogenic cooling and quantum computing technologies into next-generation data centres.

The collaboration seeks to improve the performance and energy efficiency of conventional silicon chips, while also preparing data centre infrastructure for quantum technologies.

Cryogenic cooling, at the centre of the initiative, is known to accelerate computational speed and lower power usage by operating chips at low temperatures.

The two companies plan to explore additional applications for cryogenic technologies, including reducing the cooling water demands of large-scale data centres and supporting gigawatt-scale power storage.

According to the companies, these changes could enable the use of renewable energy sources and aid in carbon capture within data centre environments.

Emergence Quantum co-founder and CEO professor David Reilly said: “It’s been understood for decades that computers run significantly faster and more efficiently in the cold, but there are challenges and costs to cooling that have so-far limited this approach to niche applications.

“The scale of data centres and tiny size of transistors today changes all that — the cryo-computing epoch has arrived.”

Emergence Quantum was established in 2025 as a spin-out from the University of Sydney, which recently received a $100m donation from the Khuda Family Foundation.

The collaboration draws on expertise in cryogenics, data centre architecture and quantum control systems.

In July 2026, AirTrunk secured a $2.325bn green financing to fund the sustainable development of its JHB2 hyperscale data centre campus located in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
