Molex has introduced VersaBeam Mini, a 16-fibre expanded beam optical connector designed for high-density AI and hyperscale data centre networks.

The new product, part of Molex’s existing VersaBeam Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) interconnect range, is designed to meet demands for higher connection density while maintaining network serviceability and technician safety.

It integrates 16 fibres into an ultra-compact 3.5 x 9 mm footprint, providing a threefold improvement in density compared to the earlier VersaBeam 16 model.

This design enables data centre operators to achieve up to 3,456 fibres within a standard 1RU panel, according to Molex.

The company developed the connector for space-limited applications including co-packaged optics, optical backbones, and front-panel switches commonly found in high-density AI and hyperscale data centres.

Molex optical connectivity general manager Trevor Smith said: “As optical densities per rack grow exponentially, network architects are hitting hard physical walls in both scale-up GPU clusters and scale-out network fabrics.

“With VersaBeam Mini, we are providing a ‘less is more’ solution that pairs a VSFF footprint with zero-touch EBO technology, delivering less contamination risk, reduced downtime and a smaller blast radius without needing specialised technical expertise.”

Molex claims that the new connector simplifies internal routing and supports 16-fibre increments, offering operators a ninefold smaller blast radius.

This allows field teams to isolate or re-route only affected lanes, reducing operational disruptions during maintenance.

The mass-insertion feature allows up to nine VersaBeam Mini connectors, covering 144 fibres, to be engaged simultaneously during initial rack installation.

Switch original equipment manufacturers are expected to benefit from the elimination of alignment guide pins and holes, as VersaBeam Mini uses a groove-based ferrule design licensed from 3M.

This supports automated assembly and may lead to fewer parts and lower material costs.

The EBO technology minimises cleaning and inspection needs by increasing dust tolerance between connectors, and the inherent laser safety features help protect technicians during servicing.

The new connector joins the VersaBeam EBO product line, which Molex launched in 2025.
