EdgeConneX has entered the Australian data centre market through a 50-50 joint venture (JV) with property developer Stockland, securing 450MW of power capacity for an initial rollout of hyperscale campuses in Sydney and Melbourne.

The partners plan to develop, own, and operate a portfolio of facilities tailored for major cloud, AI, and content providers, while progressing further planning approvals and power applications.

EdgeConneX stated that Stockland contributes land, development, and project management resources, which will be combined with its technical experience in delivering specialised facilities for large digital infrastructure clients.

To oversee its local strategy and market operations, EdgeConneX has appointed Chris Maher as Managing Director for Australia.

Maher has worked across the Asia-Pacific region and the US for over 20 years in digital infrastructure, asset management, and finance.

Maher said: “Australia has a significant opportunity to become a leading market for digital infrastructure and AI. Digital infrastructure and the technology it enables are transforming the way we live and work, from healthcare to agriculture and mining.

“I’m excited to join EdgeConneX at such a pivotal moment and to build, with our partners and customers, the sustainable digital foundations Australia needs.”

The expansion coincides with EdgeConneX joining trade body Data Centres Australia (DCA) as a principal member, working alongside its network of over 100 members.

Research from DCA’s recent Economic Impact report indicates that Australia’s renewable energy resources position the country to supply regional AI demand as an export.

DCA projects that capturing this export market could generate up to $4.1bn in additional yearly economic activity by 2030 and support up to 17,120 extra jobs, beyond domestic demand.

EdgeConneX is backed by EQT Infrastructure, a division of global investment organisation EQT.

Last month, EdgeConneX joined the Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed Phase 2.0 (STDCT 2.0) Consortium in Singapore, committing multi-year funding to research into cooling and power systems for high-density facilities.
