Digital Realty has started construction on KIX15, a 24MW data centre situated at its KIX Campus in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan.
The facility marks the fifth data centre on the campus and is planned to begin commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2028.

It is being developed by MC Digital Realty (MCDR), a 50/50 joint venture between Digital Realty and Mitsubishi Corporation.
Once completed, KIX15 will broaden the joint venture’s presence across the Tokyo and Osaka metropolitan areas, taking MCDR’s Japanese portfolio to 10 data centres with an aggregate IT capacity of about 220MW.
Designed to address increasing demand for high-density computing, advanced cooling, and reliable connectivity driven by generative AI and cloud adoption, KIX15 will reinforce hybrid air- and liquid-cooling technologies.
The campus-scalable facility is configured to accommodate hyperscalers, cloud service providers, and organisations rolling out AI infrastructure.
It serves as a central element of MCDR’s Kansai AI Infrastructure Co-Creation Project, an initiative combining KIX Campus expansion with domestic and international network connectivity and technology partnerships through the Kansai region.
Digital Realty managing director and Asia pacific head Serene Nah said: “Japan is a strategic market for Digital Realty and a key part of our long-term growth in Asia Pacific. Our continued investment in Japan reflects both our confidence in the market and our commitment to building the infrastructure customers will need for the long term.
“KIX15 is the next step in that commitment. As customer requirements become more distributed and complex, the combination of local scale and global reach will become increasingly important.”
Through the ServiceFabric orchestration and interconnection platform and alliances with network carriers, customers at KIX15 will have access to low-latency links to Japanese locations, cloud platforms, and over 300 data centres internationally.
The site will integrate into PlatformDIGITAL, the operator’s global data centre platform covering more than 55 metropolitan areas in over 30 countries.
The Osaka project follows the launch earlier this year of the NRT14 data centre in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, which received DGX-Ready Data Center certification.
In June this year, Digital Realty agreed to acquire Blackstone’s equity interests in three fully leased data centres in Northern Virginia, at a gross portfolio value of $7.8bn.
