Nordic company atNorth has announced plans to construct a new facility, named FIN05, in Salo, Finland, with an estimated investment of nearly €2bn ($2.24bn).

The proposed campus will be established on a 28.6ha plot with an initial power capacity of 75MW already secured, alongside a path to scale power capacity up to 230MW across the broader development.

Grid connectivity will be established through a Fingrid substation. In addition to atNorth’s direct capital expenditure, servers and installation funded by prospective clients could account for a further investment estimated at up to €10bn.

The Salo location was chosen for its digital infrastructure resilience, connectivity, and access to both Helsinki and the Finnish technical workforce.

atNorth CEO Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson said: “FIN05 is an opportunity to develop critical digital infrastructure while working with the region to create lasting local value.

“We are exploring how local energy partnerships, flexibility solutions and heat reuse can contribute to the wider energy system and community. We look forward to working with Salo and regional partners as the project develops.”

To support local energy production, atNorth intends to enter into long-term power purchase agreements with regional suppliers and introduce flexibility mechanisms to assist Fingrid’s transmission grid operations.

The company is also evaluating methods to capture and reuse surplus heat produced by the facility in partnership with local stakeholders.

atNorth maintains similar heat reuse initiatives with Kesko Corporation in Finland, Stockholm Exergi in Sweden, and Vestforbrænding and Selected Group in Denmark.

Salo Mayor Anna-Kristiina Korhonen said: “We are delighted to welcome this investment to our region. The new data centre will create valuable employment opportunities during both construction and ongoing operations, while generating wider economic benefits for local businesses.

“This development strengthens our position as an attractive destination for innovative industries and supports sustainable long-term growth for our community.”

Headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland, atNorth currently runs seven data centres across the Nordics.

The Salo scheme joins several other ongoing projects across the region, including large-scale sites in Kouvola, Finland; Ølgod, Denmark; Sollefteå, Sweden; and Haugaland, Norway, as well as a metropolitan site under construction in Stockholm, Sweden.
