StratGrid is constructing large-scale data centre campuses in southern Alberta, using behind-the-meter natural gas generation instead of relying on the regional utility grid.
This approach aims to provide faster interconnection timelines and stable power costs for tenants focused on AI and hyperscale computing.
StratGrid’s initial project, named Project Wheatland and situated in Wheatland County, is designed to support around 200MW of generation capacity, with potential expansion beyond 1GW.
Another site, Project Mountain View, will bring total intended platform capacity to more than 2GW over time. The company holds several hundred acres of freehold land within industrial zones for its developments.
For project development, StratGrid is collaborating with engineering and professional services provider WSP, and Sustrio, a consulting firm concentrating on sustainability, environmental and regulatory issues, as well as relations with stakeholders.
The planned projects are designed to operate quietly, require limited water, and produce low emissions from on-site power generation.
Alberta has recently been identified as an expanding centre for AI data centre development, supported by plentiful low-cost natural gas and local government backing.
Among notable developments, Meta Platforms began construction in July 2026 on a 1GW data centre in Sturgeon County, marking its first in Canada.
Jet.AI founder and executive chairman Mike Winston said: “StratGrid’s behind-the-meter power model is meant to address one of the biggest bottlenecks in new data centre development today; getting reliable, competitively priced power online fast enough to meet AI-driven demand.
“Alberta has quickly become a hotspot for this kind of development, thanks to strong support from the region’s Premier and the province’s abundant natural gas. Meta has led the charge here, and we’re very glad to be a fast follower alongside a seasoned team of partners.”
