Sembcorp Utilities, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with DayOne Data Centers (DayOne) to explore energy supply solutions for data centre developments across Asia.

DayOne is a digital infrastructure platform headquartered in Singapore.

Under the agreement, Sembcorp will act as the technical partner for selected data centre projects undertaken by DayOne.

The company will use its capabilities across the energy value chain to assess potential solutions for data centre power requirements, as well as examine wider regional opportunities.

The initiative comes as increasing AI adoption makes power demands for data centres significantly more complex.

To address these requirements, the companies plan to examine multiple energy options, including on-site power generation and infrastructure, fuel supplies, renewable energy generation, and ongoing operations and maintenance services.

DayOne CEO Jamie Khoo said: “The next phase of data centre growth requires digital infrastructure and energy solutions to be planned and delivered in a coordinated way.

“For DayOne, we think about customers’ requirements in scalable land, power, energy and other critical resources from the earliest stages of development.

“Partnering with Sembcorp gives us an opportunity to explore integrated data centre and energy solutions to support DayOne’s continued expansion across the region.”

Sembcorp gas and related services president and CEO Koh Chiap Khiong said: “Powering AI will require energy solutions that can keep pace with the scale and pace of data centre growth. Our collaboration with DayOne allows us to work together on solutions tailored to the needs of its developments.

“By combining our respective strengths, we aim to support DayOne’s growth while enabling the continued expansion of digital infrastructure across Asia.”

The arrangement supports Sembcorp’s efforts to meet expanding power demands among data centre operators and pursue commercial opportunities from digital infrastructure growth across the region.

Sembcorp has also formed other recent alliances in the data centre sector, including an MOU with Nxera Singapore to explore renewable and low-carbon energy solutions for its data centres in Singapore.

In addition, the firm was named last week as an approved aggregator under the Singapore Economic Development Board’s biomethane sandbox, a move intended to expand low-carbon energy options for data centre clients.
