Diraq has announced plans to deploy a quantum computer inside an Equinix data centre located in Sydney, Australia.

The deployment marks the first instance globally of a silicon spin quantum computer running in a shared commercial facility.

The quantum computer, developed by Diraq, includes a silicon chip carrying eight quantum bits, or qubits, housed together with cryogenic cooling and control electronics.

The entire setup is designed to fit within existing data centre alongside traditional servers, requiring less than 20kW of power and minimal integration.

Upgrading to higher qubit numbers would need only the chip itself to be swapped, with no alterations required to the surrounding infrastructure.

Diraq founder and CEO Andrew Dzurak said: “Quantum computers are about to become as essential to data centres and computing infrastructure as data servers, CPUs and GPUs.

“The data centre is where quantum computing goes mainstream, and that shift starts now. It’s a first, and the milestone is in the simplicity itself. Diraq’s quantum computers integrate into operational data centres like any other rack.

“That’s the advantage of Diraq’s silicon spin qubits: as we scale to millions of qubits, our system is deployable anywhere in the world, right next to the AI systems that are reshaping the global economy.”

The partnership aims to trial the operation of Diraq’s system in a live data centre, including its integration with classical computing resources and remote monitoring features.

The companies will also explore how quantum technology might interact with artificial intelligence and cloud platforms within a commercial data centre.

Installation at the Equinix Sydney data centre is scheduled for completion in October 2026.

Diraq’s technology is based on the same semiconductor manufacturing methods used in existing computer chips, allowing the company to aim for high qubit densities in a compact footprint.
