Hyperscale data centre platform AirTrunk has revealed plans to invest RM12bn ($3bn) to establish two new data centres, JHB3 and JHB4, in Malaysia.

This move will bring AirTrunk’s total committed investment in Malaysia to around RM27bn, totalling more than 700 megawatts (MW) of IT load when combined with its existing JHB1 and JHB2 facilities.

JHB3 and JHB4 will have a combined IT load capacity exceeding 280MW, sited near the operational JHB1 and JHB2 campuses in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

According to AirTrunk, these campuses will be designed to support high-density cloud computing and AI workloads.

In addition, they will operate with energy efficiency in mind, utilising advanced cooling systems based entirely on recycled water, and aim to minimise resource consumption.

The project is expected to create more than 3,000 construction jobs, with continued employment opportunities for local talent once operations commence.

AirTrunk has already awarded RM423m to local suppliers and expects this figure to rise to RM5bn, upon project completion.

The announcement comes after AirTrunk’s earlier confirmation regarding the JHB2 campus in early 2025, for which the company has reportedly received strong interest from global cloud and AI sectors.

The existing JHB1 and JHB2 campuses are nearly fully contracted and are progressing ahead of the original investment schedule.

The company’s current growth in Malaysia coincides with an expansion into India, where AirTrunk plans to invest over $5bn in the near term.

When its two new Malaysian campuses reach completion, AirTrunk will have more than 3.3GW of operating and planned capacity from 22 campuses in six regions, namely Australia, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and India.

AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda said: “JHB3 and JHB4 represent the next phase of our expansion in Malaysia, building on the strong momentum of our existing Johor platform.

“Malaysia has set a clear ambition to lead in AI, and we’re investing in that vision for the long term, both within Johor and across the country in time.”
